On Thursday 21st, I had my second
class experience with advanced level.
First, I started the class with a warm up activity. Then, I explained
them the grammar notes about prepositions in relative clauses, and I did some
charts in order that students could assimilate better the information and I
also provided them a lot of examples.
After that, I gave students some exercises in
order that they could practice about what I already had explained them. Then, I
developed a speaking activity related to the topic.
Something
that did not go so well was that I started with the class very late because
students had a grammar quiz and they finished very late. And when I started
with the class, students were very stressed and frustrated because of the
previous experience. Students said that the quiz was very difficult. So, when I
was explaining the grammar part, the students were very discouraged. That’s why
I could not develop another activity at the end, because the teacher told me
that I had to leave it as a homework because of that problem. I was rather
disappointed because students did not even understand the instructions to
develop the exercises, but in the feedback the teacher told me that he liked
the way I explained the grammar part and the effort that I made to teach
them well. He just told me that I must understand that it was not a good moment
for the students. To be sincere I did not like this experience, but I hope next
time it will be better.
First of all, nice touch with the charts! When you explain grammar notes, it is good to provide a visual aid to help them assimilate the content better. Having a quizz is always stressful for students because it distracts them in class, especially if it was hard, but we must deal with it :/. We must look for a way to help them learn, but it depends on the moment. ANyways, you did your best, and it counts :D
ReplyDeleteWell Vero...this is the difficult part of being a practitioner....because if you were the teacher, you could set apart the grammar part and the lesson plan and work on activities that may relex them! Like some games or something not so hard. But since we are practitioner, we have to accomplish a lesson plan and teach specific points. It could be good to be informed of these kind of activities in advanced (quizes, etc), so we can be more prepared to face ss behavior. Remember that the good teacher isn't the one that teach the best, but the one that is able to put himself on ss shoes....Nice way of teaching Vero, the use of charts and other visual aids is important. It is a shame they were so stressed..... :(
